Tilapia Fish in India: Farming, Production and Export Opportunities

India has a large and growing aquaculture sector, producing different types of freshwater and marine fish for domestic consumption and international markets. Among the farmed fish species being developed in India, Tilapia has become an important species to study for future seafood trade.

Tilapia is particularly interesting because it grows relatively quickly, can be cultured in tropical conditions and has potential as an affordable source of animal protein.

What Is Tilapia?

Tilapia is a group of freshwater and brackish-water fish that is widely cultured around the world.

One important farmed variety in India is Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT). GIFT Tilapia is based on Oreochromis niloticus, commonly known as Nile Tilapia.

According to the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), GIFT Tilapia is an important candidate species for aquaculture in India because of its fast growth and suitability for tropical farming conditions.

Tilapia Farming in India

Tilapia is suitable for aquaculture because it can be raised under controlled farming conditions.

In India, GIFT Tilapia has been successfully produced and farmed. MPEDA states that under suitable conditions, GIFT Tilapia can reach approximately 600 to 900 grams in about six months from a stocking size of around 50 to 80 grams.

This fast growth can make Tilapia an attractive option for fish farmers looking for commercially viable aquaculture species.

Tilapia farming can be carried out using different aquaculture systems, depending on local conditions, water availability, farming technology and management practices.

Growth of Tilapia Production in India

Tilapia aquaculture has been developing in India in recent years.

MPEDA reported that Indian Tilapia aquaculture production reached approximately 23,000 tonnes in 2021. MPEDA has also supported the development of GIFT Tilapia through its aquaculture research and development activities.

The development of improved Tilapia strains and better farming practices can help India increase production and develop new markets for this fish.

India and Tilapia Exports

Tilapia is becoming increasingly relevant to India's seafood export sector.

According to MPEDA's export performance data, India exported approximately 4,623 tonnes of Tilapia in 2022–23. This increased to 6,420 tonnes in 2023–24.

This represents a quantity increase of approximately 38.89 percent in one year. The export value also increased from approximately US$4.82 million to US$6.22 million.

These figures show that Tilapia is developing as an exportable Indian seafood product.

Tilapia for International Seafood Markets

International buyers may look for Tilapia in different forms depending on their market and processing requirements.

Potential requirements can include:

  • Whole fish

  • Cleaned fish

  • Frozen fish

  • Fillets

  • Specific fish sizes

  • Individual or bulk packing

  • Food-service quantities

  • Retail packaging

Actual product specifications should always be confirmed with the buyer before a commercial transaction.

For exporters, important factors include product quality, cold-chain management, processing facilities, packaging, documentation, transportation and compliance with the destination country's import requirements.

Tilapia and the Thailand Market

Thailand has its own aquaculture and seafood production sector, so India-to-Thailand Tilapia trade should be approached as a market-research opportunity rather than assuming that Thai buyers automatically require Indian Tilapia.

The important question is whether particular Thai importers, distributors, wholesalers, restaurants, food-service businesses or seafood processors are looking for additional sources of Tilapia.

Thailand also imports significant quantities of frozen fish products from international suppliers. For example, World Bank WITS trade data shows that Thailand imported more than 63 million kg of frozen fish meat, excluding fillets, in 2024, with India supplying more than 12.7 million kg in that product category. This category is broader than Tilapia, so it should not be interpreted as Tilapia-specific import data.

Therefore, Tilapia can be included in the research process for potential India-to-Thailand seafood business.

What Thai Buyers May Want to Know

Before approaching a Thai seafood buyer, an Indian supplier should be prepared to provide information such as:

  • Fish species and variety

  • Scientific name

  • Product form

  • Fish size

  • Fresh or frozen condition

  • Available quantity

  • Packing method

  • Minimum order quantity

  • Price

  • Delivery location

  • Processing and quality standards

  • Export documentation

  • Payment terms

Buyer requirements should be confirmed before arranging regular supply.

Why Tilapia May Be Interesting for India-to-Thailand Trade

Tilapia has several characteristics that make it worth studying as an export product.

India has an expanding aquaculture sector, GIFT Tilapia is being farmed successfully, and India's Tilapia exports have shown strong growth in recent years.

For an India-to-Thailand business, the commercial opportunity would depend on the buyer's actual requirements, competitive pricing, consistent supply, product quality and compliance with Thai import regulations.

The objective should therefore be to identify genuine Thai buyers first and understand their requirements before making a supply commitment.

Conclusion

Tilapia is an important aquaculture fish with growing commercial relevance in India.

GIFT Tilapia, based on Oreochromis niloticus, is being successfully farmed in India, and Indian Tilapia exports increased significantly between 2022–23 and 2023–24.

The growth of Tilapia farming and exports makes this fish an interesting product for research into international seafood markets, including potential opportunities in Thailand.

For any international seafood transaction, buyers and exporters should confirm product specifications, quality, packing, pricing, documentation, logistics and destination-country import requirements before finalizing a shipment.
